New to Livejoural or The Supernatural Fandom, OR, Not Sure How To Make A Cut, Link or Post Grapics?
Hi, I'm Wenchpixe, your friendly neighbourhood guide :). If you've any questions on how to do something or where to find something this is the post to comment on and ask.

In this post you'll find links to some of the main comms within the fandom that we've found to be relatively friendly to spoiler phobes (and we won't include links to any comm where one of the mods or staff have already been spoiled) - If you want to promote your comm and you're happy that a casual browse round it won't spoil anyone then please comment here and I'll add you to the list.

You'll also find some coding help here - how to make cuts and so forth. I won't make a new journal layout for you - the coding for it annoys me too - but I might be able to point you at a comm that will help you do it yourself.

~~~
How to:
Create an LJ Cut with text - cuts ONLY work on posts, not comments, If you're linking to icons in a comment, post them in your own journal then link (the how to is further down)
an LJ cut is one of those links that you can stick a bit (or most) of your post behind
<lj-cut text="the text you want for your link">
Here you put the text of your post
</lj-cut>
Link to another post
  1. Copy the URL of the post you want to link to - the http://user.livejournal.com/number.html bit
  2. In the comment or post you want to post the link type <a href="http://user.livejournal.com/number.html">The Link Text</a> (where http://user.livejournal.com/number.html is the URL of the post you're linking to)
make things bold
type <b>the text to be bold</b>
make things italics
type <i>the text to italic</i>
link to another LJ user
type <lj user="THEUSER'SNAME"> (for example <lj user="wenchpixie"> would link you to me)
Only see the default community icon
if you go to this LJ FAQ it will explain how to make all posts from the communities on your flist display in your flist using the community default icon, not the icon the user has picked. If there is a comm that you want to view that people tend to use icons from the pre-released pics this can be fairly handy
hide all images (you can click on them to view)
go to: http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/ and scroll down until you see "Image placeholders" and change that to "all images"
To change which of your friends list you see on your friends list page
Livejournal provides several ways of filtering your friends list. If you go to http://www.livejournal.com/friends/editgroups.bml you can edit your custom groups which you can use in several different ways (see livejournal's FAQ here: http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=102 ) but there are some things that are particularly useful for spoiler phobes.
  • If you create a group called Default View - ONLY those people and comms you add to that group will show up on your standard friends page
  • If you creat a view calls Mobile View The people in that group will show up on a page that ONLY lists their username, the comm they're posting on (if it's a comm post) and the title of the post. If you don't have a Mobile View friends group then ALL your friends will show up on that list - you can see what it looks like here: http://www.livejournal.com/mobile/friends.bml
(and that's the link to view it that way - the Mobile View from the drop down won't display them like that)
I use both groups - I keep the people and comms that I know won't spoil me on my Default View and everyone else goes on Mobile View
add user pictures
  • Find the picture you like (it will need to be the right size for an icon - 100*100pixels or smaller) and right click on it, and save it to your computer (remember where!).
  • Then go to http://www.livejournal.com/editpics.bml and click on the "browse" button. That'll bring up a standard windows browsing box, so just navigate to where you saved your image and double click on it.
  • Then in the "Keywords" box type one or more words that'll help you identify the picture and in the "comments" box add any information like who made it, where it's from that kind of thing
To credit my icons just copy:
Made by <lj user="wenchpixie">
Into the comments box :) (and for any other makers, just change the name ;) )
Other Communities, Sites and Posts you might find useful
  • The Newbie Guide - this community is a good starting point for most fandoms. I've linked to the Supernatural entry which is unspoilery, but which contains links which may lead to spoilery places
  • The Super-wiki - The most complete source for all things Supernatural. Is spoiler-phobe friendly.
  • The Supernatural Newsletter - is a daily round up of all the fic, icons, pictures, vids and other multimedia posted in the Livejournal fandom - they watch several of the comms and people post to link directly. Spoilerphobe friendly
  • Spn_Betas - New writer? Find someone to help knock your story into shape at SPN_betas
  • Crack Impala - Fic, Icon and Vid recs - spoilerphobe friendly
  • spnfic_podcast - is currently on hiatus, but if you've not already checked it out, it's well worth a listen
Hi hon!
Help? I love the idea of this comm (as you knew I would) and have applied to join, but am finding it really hard to read the coloured text on the black background. I have used ?style=mine where possible, but when I click on a lj-cut to read posts, and it takes me to a URL ending in a cutid #, I can't seem to get
?style=mine to work. Is there a way I can fix this?
We'll have a look at the design and see if we can't make it a little easier to read, but in the meantime
http://community.livejournal.com/spnfencentral/493.html?style=mine#cutid1 should work for you - you put the ?style=mine (or ?format=light) before the # :)
Thank you!
my pleasure - I've changed the layout a little (until Ash is available to work her magic :)) and it should now be easier to read anyway.
